Alison Binks’ Beneath, Beyond is an exhibition of paintings that depict elemental parts of the natural world – in particular, the sky and sea. Familiar yet ephemeral in subject, the technique and composition of Binks’ works allow enough space and abstraction to capture our imagination and allow it to roam.
At the time of commencing this new series of paintings Binks was contemplating motherhood and later preparing for the birth of her first child. In this time of readjustment her thoughts when painting were centered around the quietness and peace that she felt would inevitably be lost with this change. Binks sought the quality of calmness and found it emerging in her paintings. Even the seas, with their constant movement, seem to slow down and there is stillness and quiet for a moment. The result of this cathartic, meditative period of time, led Binks toward producing a series of works that have a calming static quality, as if time has stood still.
