Jewels Stevens’ latest paintings in her new exhibition Chrysalis are bold, expressive and layered. Immediately engaging Stevens’ works prompt us to explore inner thoughts and emotive reactions to the mysteriousness of the physical world as well as the infinite realms of possibility that exist inside our consciousness.
Stevens formulates these cacophonies of colour through the working and reworking of lines, shapes and texture to create compositions that resonate vibrancy and atmosphere. From one vantage point the works seem to be images of microscopic worlds not visible to the naked eye, at other times they appear akin to a super nova breaking apart and jettisoning away from a central source of intense energy. Stevens’ work reflects on the wonder of the world we live in and inexplicable aspects of human experience through allegorical reference to natural systems such as the process of chrysalis as a caterpillar transforms to become a butterfly.
