Jock Langslow

Hotel Mombassa

Jock Langslow currently works from his studio near Hesket, Victoria, however he spent many years traveling through various parts of the world accruing an understanding of the ways in which stories of people and their place in the world are marked in stone. In addition to gaining a first hand understanding of the importance of stone from his travels, Langslow has been successful in incorporating some of the techniques and patterning that is prevalent in the stone work of various cultures to his own work.

In his first solo exhibition at Kick Gallery, Stone Carvings [2008], Langslow created wall hangings and free standing sculptures that incorporated particular types of calligraphy, objects found in the natural world as well as common forms. In his latest exhibition Hotel Mombassa [2010] Langslow references the art and architecture of post colonial Uganda and Kenya in works that explore spaces for rest both real and imagined.
