Rius Carson is an artist that deftly works across the mediums of painting and sculpture. In his latest exhibition Sculptural Thought Carson focuses on the directness and immediacy of his wood carving primarily made through the use of chainsaw, chisels and sandpaper. Trying to capture the permanence and physicality of the sculpture that he makes, Carson has created a series of tall free standing works that allow his audience to experience a sense of interaction and confrontation when a sculpture occupies the same space as the viewer in such a dramatic way. In other sculptural works, such as totemic wall hangings and masks, Carson pays credence to notions of an innate human spirituality.
