Secrets of Vehement Dreams

Jewels Stevens is a painter who creates atmospheric works using a wide pallet of colour, tone and mark, which she combines to create pictures that are imbued with a kind of sensual symphonic energy. The notion that Stevens work is somehow musical or ‘symphonic’ relates to the process in which she creates her paintings. Emersed in music when she paints, Stevens’ vehement dreams are translated from conscious and subconscious thoughts and emotions into forms and shapes that are abstract and visually dynamic. Stevens softly drawn imagery of undefined and mysterious organic matter is harmonious and humbly assured, and while at first take there appear few visual cues to attach ideas to, there exists a somehow secretive, omnipresent, spiritual content. Through her work, Jewels invites us all to experience ‘reverie’ - a dreamlike journey of being lost in thought - and to leave intellectual concerns behind for a while and explore the possibilities of visual language.
